There’s something powerful about gathering with people who share your values and your commitment to making a difference. This week, we had the privilege of hosting a joint club assembly that brought together the Rotary Club of Victoria, the Rotary Club of Coco de Mer, and the Rotaract Club of Mahé, united under the inspiring leadership of District Governor Bernard Leong Son from Rotary International District 9220.
More Than Just a Meeting
While “assembly” might sound formal, what unfolded was something much more meaningful – a genuine coming together of minds and hearts dedicated to service. It was fellowship in its truest sense: sharing experiences, learning from one another, celebrating our collective achievements, and dreaming together about the impact we can create across our beautiful islands.
District Governor Bernard Leong Son brought clarity and inspiration to the room, sharing the district’s vision, priorities, and strategic goals for this Rotary year. His message resonated deeply with all of us: Service Above Self isn’t just a motto we recite – it’s a living commitment that guides every decision we make, every project we undertake, every hour we volunteer.
Building Bridges, Strengthening Bonds
What made this assembly particularly special was the diversity of voices and perspectives in the room. Club leaders and members from across our Rotary family engaged in thoughtful, constructive discussions about the work we’re doing and the work we’re planning.
We talked about ongoing projects and the exciting initiatives on the horizon. We discussed membership development – not just growing our numbers, but deepening our impact and welcoming people who share our passion for service. We explored youth engagement, recognizing that young people aren’t just the future of Rotary; they’re vital contributors to our mission right now.
And perhaps most importantly, we identified opportunities for joint initiatives – projects where our clubs can combine our strengths, pool our resources, and multiply our impact by working together rather than in parallel.
The Power of Unity
One of the themes that emerged throughout the assembly was the critical importance of unity between Rotary and Rotaract. Our Rotaract members bring fresh perspectives, boundless energy, and innovative approaches to community challenges. When we bridge generations and work hand in hand, something beautiful happens – we advance humanitarian service more effectively, we develop stronger leaders, and we create community-driven solutions that truly reflect the needs and dreams of the people we serve.
This isn’t just organizational strategy; it’s about recognizing that we’re stronger together, that each club and each generation brings unique gifts to our shared mission.
Grounded in Core Values
Throughout all our discussions – about projects, membership, collaboration, and growth – we kept coming back to what grounds us: Rotary’s core values. Integrity, service, fellowship, diversity, and leadership aren’t abstract ideals for us. They’re the compass that guides our work, the foundation that supports everything we build, the heart that beats within every initiative we undertake.
District Governor Bernard Leong Son helped us see these values not as constraints but as sources of strength and clarity. When we stay true to who we are and what we stand for, our impact becomes not just larger but more meaningful and sustainable.
Looking Forward with Renewed Purpose
As the assembly concluded, we left with more than just action plans and project timelines. We left with renewed energy, strengthened connections, and a clearer sense of how our individual clubs fit into the larger tapestry of Rotary service across District 9220.
We’re reminded that we’re part of something much bigger than any single club or project. From Seychelles to Mauritius, from Réunion to Madagascar, from Mayotte to Djibouti and Comoros, we’re connected by shared values and a common commitment to making our world a better place.
Gratitude and Commitment
We’re deeply grateful to District Governor Bernard Leong Son for his leadership, his wisdom, and his dedication to strengthening our district’s capacity for service. Thank you to our friends at the Rotary Club of Coco de Mer and the Rotaract Club of Mahé for your partnership and for the inspiring work you’re doing in your communities.
And to every Rotarian and Rotaractor in Seychelles – whether you were in the room or not – thank you for living out the principle of Service Above Self every day. Your dedication doesn’t go unnoticed. Your impact matters more than you may realize.
The Work Continues
This assembly wasn’t an endpoint; it was a launching pad. Armed with new insights, strengthened relationships, and aligned strategies, we’re ready to tackle the projects ahead with renewed vigor and deeper collaboration.
The challenges facing our communities are real, but so is our collective determination to address them. When we come together like this – sharing resources, combining strengths, learning from one another – there’s no limit to what we can achieve.
Together, united in service and guided by our values, we’re creating sustainable impact that will strengthen our communities for generations to come.
