Growing a Culture of Reading: Rotary Club of Victoria and Sustainability for Seychelles Launch Little Book House at Anse Etoile

Published: March 23, 2026

There’s something beautifully simple about a small wooden house filled with books, standing open for anyone who passes by. It asks for nothing but curiosity. It offers everything a good book can — knowledge, imagination, escape, and connection. On 23 March 2026, the Rotary Club of Victoria, in collaboration with Sustainability for Seychelles, brought that beautiful simplicity to life with the installation of a Little Book House at the Anse Etoile District Administration Office.

Little Houses, Big Dreams

The Little Book House is part of a broader initiative led by Sustainability for Seychelles, inspired by the global “Little Free Library” movement. The concept is wonderfully straightforward — community members are encouraged to take a book and leave a book, creating a living cycle of sharing, curiosity, and lifelong learning. It’s a project that speaks directly to the values we hold dear as Rotarians: education, access, and the belief that every person deserves the opportunity to grow.

The installation was carried out by RCV President Ranjan Orphee and Community Service Director Rotarian Edward Mullen, with the support of S4S Chairperson Dr. Marie-Therese Purvis and S4S Treasurer Mr. Eric Frank. Seeing our members work side by side with our partners from Sustainability for Seychelles was a reminder that the most impactful projects are the ones built on genuine collaboration and shared vision.

More Than Books on a Shelf

This initiative isn’t just about placing books in a public space — it’s about planting seeds of change. Literacy is the foundation of personal and national development, and by making books more accessible to individuals of all ages, particularly children and families, we are nurturing habits that will ripple outward for years to come.

As President Ranjan Orphee shared, “This project is a simple but powerful way to bring books closer to people. By placing these book houses in accessible community spaces, we are encouraging reading habits, knowledge sharing, and community participation.” Those words capture the heart of what this initiative is about — meeting people where they are and inviting them into a world of possibility.

The Little Book House at Anse Etoile is accessible to the public around the clock and will be maintained with the support of local stakeholders. The project also carries an important environmental dimension, promoting the reuse and recycling of books and reinforcing the message that sustainability touches every part of our lives.

Gratitude and Shared Purpose

We are deeply grateful to Sustainability for Seychelles, and in particular to Dr. Marie-Therese Purvis and Mr. Eric Frank, for their leadership and vision in driving this initiative forward. We also extend our warmest thanks to President Ranjan Orphee and Rotarian Edward Mullen for their hands-on dedication, and to the Anse Etoile District Administration for welcoming this project into their community space.

Looking Ahead

This installation marks an important milestone, but it is only the beginning. The long-term vision is to establish Little Book Houses in communities across Seychelles, district by district, creating a nationwide network of free reading points that belong to the people. Under our theme “Unite for Good,” the Rotary Club of Victoria is proud to support this kind of community-driven initiative — one that combines education, sustainability, and the simple joy of a good book.

Together, one book, one reader, one community at a time, we are growing a culture of learning and sharing that will benefit generations to come.
